Hey peeps,
I’m a kayak fisherman in Auckland, New Zealand. I am somewhat clumsy and, how should I put this, “practically stupid”. I don’t mean that I’m intellectually stupid, in fact I have an above average IQ and I’m a successful software developer and what not, but I seem to do really stupid things when it comes to practical matters like DIY and sticky situations I seem to get myself into while kayaking and whatnot. So I hope it’ll make for some interesting reading.
I also seem to be a bit slow in learning new techniques when it comes to practical matters, even as simple as tying a knot. For example, when I started with softbait fishing, I really struggled to master a knot for tying my braid to mono. I’d take two rods out with me and if one of them got snagged, then I’d stow it and have to wait till I got home to watch a video again on how to tie the knot. Now I’ve conquered what I think is called the Albright Knot and there are two little tricks I learned that’s made it easy for me which I didn’t see mentioned in any of the Youtube videos. So later today I’ll make a video on how I tie my leader to braid and hopefully I can give you a couple of tips like that. Guys on the kayak fishing forum tell me I’m calamity prone and I think I probably am a little excessively clumsy or stupid or slow or whatever causes these things to happen, but I’m thinking there must be other non-expert fishermen out there that love the sport and love the outdoors but might not be quite as clued up as some of the guys I’ve met. So this blog is aimed at others who just want to have fun, even if you don’t do it perfectly. Learn with me and laugh with me or at me, I don’t mind.
Lastly, I don’t get to fish often enough to keep this blog afloat with just fishing posts, so I might talk about my family and stuff as well. I am a stepfather to 8 children, I may or may not have Asperger’s Syndrome and my wife is pretty “unique” herself, so there’s some talking to be done about our family as well – hence my username, FOM, is for FatherOfMany. If you’re not interested in that stuff, just stick to the fishing category or categories
