My brother and I have always had a friendly fishing competition on the go, since childhood I guess. Generally I think I’ve beaten him in terms of the amount of fishing I’ve done and the amount of fish caught. Even when I was living in Johannesburg, South Africa, which is 700kms from the coast, I took up freshwater fishing just to make sure I get around to fishing. But he’s definitely beaten me in terms of large fish! Damn it! As a young man he once caught a 23kg cob (jewfish) on a hand-line and a few years ago he caught a 100kg+ marlin. I’ll be honest, I’m not particularly interested in that big-game fishing style with other people around and a skipper telling you what to do and whatnot, but that doesn’t matter… I need something in the larger size to even out this competition again. To date my largest edible/table fish is a cob/jewfish that I would guess at around 7kgs.
So… New Zealand is famous for its kingfish and I’ve decided that I need to catch a 20kg+ kingfish from my kayak to get back in the game. And that is my top goal, a 20kg+ kingfish.
My other fishing goals are as follows:
- Snapper: 75cm snapper (current PB is 60cm)
- Big Bin: Bring home 10+ legal fish made up of at least 2 species (ie. 5 snapper + 5 kahawai)
- Catch a legal:
- Kingfish
- Trevally
- Gurnard
