Kayak Fishing NZ

My Heavy Kayak Beach Cart

March 19, 2016 by FOM 1 Comment

I have an Old Town Predator XL kayak with an electric motor and a massive SLA battery. The kayak weighs over 40kgs, the battery weighs another 29kg and I don’t know its weight, but the motor console must be another 5 – 10kgs. Then comes all the fishing gear, fish finder and SLA battery for the fish finder. So all in all it’s a fair amount of weight to move around. All good on the water because I have the electric motor, but a different story getting all of that from my car to the water – often across soft sand and often across stoney beaches.

As much as I love my c-tug cart for how is snugs around the kayak body, those hard, plastic wheels just didn’t cut it with this heavy weight across either soft sand or stones. Last year another kayaker ordered 2 sets of balloon wheels from China and made a modification to our c-tug carts to fit these big, beach wheels. Worked like a charm, until I left them in the January (summer in NZ) sun on the back of my kayak.

So that was the end of them! Of course the easy option is just to buy a wheeleez cart, but at $329 for a cart, I just do not want to support them. I know my time that I spent finding these other wheels is worth more than that, but it’s a matter of principal, I think they’re a ripoff. Having said that, if these new wheels don’t work out, I’ll probably end up buying a wheeleez cart as I may be out of options.

So, I ended up buying 4 x $20 wheels from WheelCo and 2 of them fit perfectly onto the conversion on each side on my C-tug.

So ‘dem ma new wheelz! Looks pretty mean, but untested at present so I’ll have to let you know how they perform after my first trip.

[…] the time I got to the beach there were indeed a few kayakers busy setting up already. Tried out my new cart wheels, but I’m afraid they don’t work terribly well on a stoney beach. Might have to deflate […]
